>> jr stone is at the hospital tonight in walnut creek where that officer is fighting for his life. >> reporter: within the last hour i talked with the acting chief of the california highway patrol and he tells me that the officer was shot here, kenyon youngstrum. he is in critical condition. paul fontana, acting chief, took to a statement tuesday night after one of his officers was shot during a traffic stop in this section of 680 in walnut creek >> prior to his service with the highway patrol, he served proudly as a patriot with the u.s. army reserve. >> reporter: the veteran is currently in critical condition. authorities say he and another officer pulled over the person driving this green jeep. he was shot. immediately the second

officer opened fire, shooting the driver who later died. the acting chief says the officer's infectious are currently by his side >> they asked me to convey their thanks to their extended family and friends, the law enforcement and public safety community, and the public for their support in this difficult time for them. >> reporter: the circumstances behind the traffic stop are unknown at this hour. it's also unclear why one of the officers parked in front. the jeep. what is clear is that his family members and friends are hoping for the best. >> we also ask for everyone's prayers as he fights for his life. thank you very much. >> reporter: the officer is on life support here at the medical center in walnut creek. he's been with the chp for seven years. if we get any update, we'll bring it to you here on kron4 news. jr stone, kron4 news.

>> and there has been an outpouring of support in the fairfield neighborhood where the officer lives. neighbors tell us he is a good guy with a tough job. >> i'm just taken back because he's always playing with his kids in the front yard and, you know, i can tell that he was a good dad. >> we were talking about how it's a great thing but always a worry having to go to work every day, and then coming home to your family. he just got a car for his boy. he's a great family man. i know he's devoted to his job. he was a great person. i just can't believe it happened. wow. >> the shooting took place early this morning during the busy commute, and one driver saw it all unfold right before his eyes. he describes what he saw. >> i heard popping noises. i thought it was the truck next to me backfiring. i looked over and there was a semi next to me.

i thought it was the semi. then i looked under the semi, and the officer was already down. i looked over my shoulder as the traumatic passed, that's when i noticed the second officer on the embankment firing into the rear of the jeep or suzuki or whatever it was. and because i was more or less in the line of fire, i just wanted to get out of there. >> the shooting shut down interstate 680 for most of the day. >> reporter: we'll show you exactly where the shooting happened. this is south of walnut creek where 24 and 680 come together. 680 south, the officer pulling over the suspect on the shoulder there. arch the shooting, 680 closed in both directions.

northbound lanes opened around 1:00 pm. grant lotus, kron4 news. >> and even though the traffic has cleared up tonight, it was a problem all morning and much of the day. here is video as you see beside me, of 680 minute of cars this morning. >> reporter: the highway patrol not bothering to stop a vehicle driving the wrong way down a freeway on-ramp? it was that kind of chaotic day here following an officer-involved shooting. frustrated drivers decided to put their cars in reverse and drive backward down the on-ramp to escape the traffic nightmare. others just said whatever and got out of their cars altogether, looking for a way around the backup.

the state has cut its funding by $50 million in the last three years alone. supporters rallied outside city hall today in favor of proposition a. it is a $79 parcel tax on the november

ballot. it needs 2/3 of the vote to pass. it was recently revealed that city college is in jeopardy of losing its accreditation because of problems in the management of the school's finances. protestors hit with pepper spray at uc davis have offered to settle their lawsuit against the university. this was the scene which you may recall. the lawsuit filed by 21 students seeks damages as well as preshgsz for nonviolent protestors. exactly terms of the settlement remain pending approval by the uc regents. >> bigs changes coming to the forecast in the next 24 hours. and a chanzhunderstorms in the forecast.

the next couple days. probably going to feel a little muggy on thursday. then into the weekend, things will get back to normal with the fog in the morning, sunshine in the afternoon. temperatures in the 70s and 80s for the most part >> it looks like it's official. the day apple fan s have been waiting for is almost here. apple sent out official e-mail invites to the media inviting them to attend an event in san francisco next wednesday, the 12th. the company is expected to unveil the new iphone at that time. the only thing in the e-mail was this picture of the no. 12, the date of the event, and "it's almost here." if you look closely in front of the 12, the reflection is a no. 5. that would seem to hint toward iphone 5. apple has said nothing about what will take place at the event of the so we asked gabe slate to examine all of the rumors and tell us what to expect. >> let's start with what i think we can count on for the iphone 5. first the name. their e-mail invite with

the mysterious shadowed no. 5 tells me it will be named the iphone 5 and not 4g or some other name. here is one leaked video of a possible prototype. we don't know if this video is real. apple has not confirmed anything. but the physical concept it depicts i do agree with. i think it will be similar to this shape and design. i believe the iphone 5 will be fully officially 4g. we can count on this new iphone being faster. every upgrade so far has featured a faster processor. it will be thinner, lighter, and the screen will be bigger. android has had a leg up on iphones with their big-screen phones. the new phone will probably come in just

under with a 4-inch screen. the release date, the rumor is september 21st, nine-days after the event next week. but it might not hit the shelf until november. carriers, at&t, verizon, and sprint like it does now. but will they add t-mobile? and the biggest rumor, it might come with a smaller dock plug. this would be a radical change. every accessory that people own for their iphones, all the cases, chargers, car kit, speaker, alarm clocks would be useless with the new iphone and its smaller dock input connector. be sure to tune into kron4 news next week. we will bring you all the news from the apple event. san jose police are just releasing details about an intrfgz into a gang-relate --

investigation into a gang-related shooting in a residential street. it happened on sunday evening. residents who are apparently also members of a rival gang returned fire. no injuries were reported and no arrests have been made. the shootout came less than a week after a vigil for recent victims of gang violence there. the a's battle the equally red-hot angels at the coliseum, and another crazy game for the giants at at&t park as they go tra innings.
